Animals of the Maui Wildfires
We follow five staff members of Maui Humane Society as they experience the August 2023 wildfires on Maui and the extraordinary efforts of the Maui Humane Society staff in the devastating aftermath.
With firsthand accounts, the series showcases the resilience, compassion, and enduring spirit of the Maui community. The story also addresses broader challenges such as the housing crisis and the importance of learning from past experience to inform and shape the path forward.
Despite the urgent need for animal rescue, authorities restricted access to the burn zone. This decision left many questioning the rationale behind it and who was responsible.
In the debut episode of our podcast series, "Animals of The Maui Wildfires," we embark on a journey with Jenny Miller, the development director of Maui Humane Society (MHS) in August 2023, as she introduces us to the heart and soul of this vital organization, founded in 1952, MHS has evolved into a beacon of animal welfare innovation on the island today.
The episode focuses on communal rebuilding efforts, the significant role of trap-neuter-release (TNR) programs for managing displaced animals, and staff reflections on working in the burn zone.
Moani Makaiwi recounts her haunting experience driving into Lahaina about 24 hours after the fires began. Moani’s first night in Lahaina was marked by overwhelming darkness, silence, and the sight of burning neighborhoods.
